Oreo on WNBC for Nutro Pet Food Recall Image by SheepGuardingLlama
This is Oreo our Boston Terrier when he made the evening and then morning news on WNBC in NYC for the Menu Foods pet food recall. He ate Nutro wet food and was very, very sick. He was hospitalized for 26 hours but we caught it in time and he is doing better now and only eating home cooked food.

Harry Plays a Joke Image by Douglas Brown
Yes, there is a story with this photo! A friend of mine played a joke on her parents who where celebrating their 50th Wedding Anniversary. Her father said they were thinking of getting a little dog since they’d never had a dog. So my friend borrowed Harry to take him over as a surprise anniversary gift. I pretended to be the breeder and would show them the ropes in handling their new dog!
For dramatic effect, my friend had everyone cut a hole in the bottom of a garbage bag and wear the garbage bag because she knew Harry would eventually sling a lot of slobber in all the excitement of meeting so many new people. And Harry did not disappoint… not a minute after I took this photo, Harry shook his head side to side and hit just about every single person with slobber.
But the joke came off really well and everyone thought it was funny… Harry was pretty much the biggest dog most of them had ever seen in person and not exactly the “small dog” they were thinking about…

9 Super Dogs in The History of Mankind And Their Individual Achievements
OG Dog! The original Rin Tin Tin
Aside from detecting cancer and taking their owners to the doctor, dogs have contributed a great deal to mankind and his existence. Here is a brief description of 9 super canines and their remarkable stories dating back in time:-
Super Dog 1: Barry.
St Bernard lived in a monastery from 1800 to 1810. This dog saved many lives on the dangerous pass between Swiss-Italian border. This pass took people to over 8000 feet above sea level causing all sorts of problems.
Super Dog 2: Stubby in 1918.
Stubby was the most decorated hero in US military history. And rightly so because this pit bull terrier played as important a role in the war as any other soldier did if not better. This canine went along with the American soldiers on 17 different battles which in itself is a remarkable achievement. This dog operated in extreme conditions to locate wounded American soldiers so that they can be helped and rescued to safe places.
Super Dog 3: Togo
In 1925, this Siberian husky must have broken the land speed record because Togo traveled nearly 130 miles day. The total journey time was 5.5 days covering a distance of nearly 700 miles. Add to that the Alaskan snow and the whole journey looks virtually impossible. But, Togo made it to his intended destination and delivered its cargo of medicine. Guess what the cargo was? It was serum to prevent an epidemic of diphtheria and Togo did indeed prevent the spread of diphtheria.
Rin Tin Tin was a famous movie star in his short life from 1918 to 1932. Rin Tin Tin had his own limousine to take him about. Add to that, a personal chef for Rin Tin Tin to accompany him on his travels and to organize his meals. Rin Tin Tin is rumored to have passed away in the arms of the actress Jean Harlow. Way to go Rin Tin Tin.
Super Dog 5: Rob.
This “Collie” ran very dangerous missions during the 40s or around the time of the second world war. He would go behind enemy lines using parachute. He would the army personnel get a good night sleep by standing guard in their place.
Super Dog 6: Laika
Laika became world famous for its travels. This was the first non human to travel round the world. Laika traveled in the Russian spaceship sputnik 2 and had its names added to the history. Unfortunately, she only lived for a few hours so Laika’s fame was short lived.
Super Dog 7: Roselle
Roselle led her blind owner to safety. This is a recent story and relates to the 9/11 incident in twin tower New York. Roselle; a Labrador, not only guided its owner down the 78 story building but also helped him to safety by taking his owner to a friends house.
Super Dog 8. Endal.
A wheel chair bound man was knocked out of his chair and became unconscious. This Labrador moved the man into recovery position, covered him with a blanket and finally moved a mobile phone near the man so that he could call for help. Endal by his quick thinking saved this man’s life.
Super Dog 9: Orca
Orca saved lives of children. A group of children went missing on a mountain excursion in South Africa. This Alsation helped the rescuer find so that they could be brought to safety. Fortunately, all the children were rescued to safety thanks to the efforts of Orca.
Finally, dogs have made an invaluable contribution to mankind recently in tackling life threatening medical conditions by making diagnosis. Dogs will continue to amaze me by their valuable input for years to come.

RIN TIN TIN is considered the most recognized name in the history of the German Shepherd Dog and likewise one of the oldest continuous bloodlines in the breed’s 111-year history. The auspicious beginnings of RIN TIN TIN would lead to two families dedicating their lives to the preservation of not only his legacy, but also the quality lineage for which he would become known. The original RIN TIN TIN was a mere puppy of 5 days old when Corporal Lee Duncan insisted that his battalion in Lorraine, France check out a bombed war dog kennel during World War I. What he found on that fateful day of September 15, 1918 was a mother German Shepherd Dog and her litter, the only survivors of the bomb dropped. Betty had five puppies. Duncan chose two of the puppies, a male and a female, and members of the battalion took the mother and remainder back to their camp. Ironically, the only survivors over the next few months were the two pups Duncan had claimed. He named the pups after tiny French puppets the children gave to the American soldiers for good luck. The male was named RIN TIN TIN and the female Nannette. Duncan worked with the dogs training them to perform as he had seen the German war dogs perform during the war. He was wildly impressed with the breed’s ability and wanted to learn more. He discovered that the German kennel master had been captured by the Americans and went so far as to visit him in the prison camp, all to learn more about the German Shepherd Dog. When the war was over Duncan made special arrangements to take his two pups back to the United States with him to his home in Los Angeles. He and the pups were allowed aboard a ship that transported them to New York on a 15-day journey. During the trip Nannette became ill with distemper and by the time Duncan arrived in New York she was quite ill. With his driving interest in the breed, upon his arrival in New York he met Mrs. Wanner, at that time considered a premier breeder of German Shepherd Dogs in the U.S. She offered to keep Nannette to try to save her from her illness, but the pup died before Duncan’s train to California had arrived. Mrs. Wanner, knowing Duncan’s love for the breed, sent him one of her finest female puppies to replace Nannette. Once back home and with the war over, Duncan returned to his job at a hardware store. Still enamored with his dogs, he attended dog shows with his beloved RIN TIN TIN.
OG Dog! The original Rin Tin Tin
In 1922 at a show, RIN TIN TIN amazed everyone with his ability to perform by jumping 11 feet 9 inches. Following the show, Charles Jones who asked if he could try out his new camera that made moving pictures approached Duncan. He offered Duncan $350 to film the dog in action. Duncan accepted and knew at that moment there could be a future for him and his dog in films. Duncan pursued the film concept, contacting nearly every studio in Hollywood with his dog and a script, Where The North Begins. He was turned down by one studio after another, but determined he would not give up. He knew RIN TIN TIN was special.
Rin Tin Tin II - Son of Rin Tin Tin
Finally one day while approaching studios on what was called ‘poverty row’ he saw a film crew trying to shoot a scene with a wolf and not having success. He approached the crew and told them he and his dog could do the scene in one take. He was told to go away and to take his dog and script with him. He persisted, and finally, they allowed him to try the scene with RIN TIN TIN. Voila, the scene was shot in one take as he had promised and they kept him on for the filming of “Man From Hell’s River.” The name of fledgling studio on the verge of bankruptcy was Warner Brothers Pictures. The film was a hit and RIN TIN TIN was a sensation. The public loved him and his heroic ability. RIN TIN TIN ultimately made 26 pictures for Warner Brothers before his death on August 10, 1932. He was referred to as the mortgage lifter and credited with saving the studio from financial ruin during the silent film era. At the peak of his career with Warner Brothers he received some 10,000 fan letters a week and was considered to be one of Hollywood’s top stars. When RIN TIN TIN died unexpectedly on that fateful Friday he was scheduled to begin a new film for Warner Brothers the following Monday. Not only was Duncan devastated at his loss, but also so was the studio as they both found themselves without a star. Duncan had raised several litters from RIN TIN TIN and had kept a pup he called Junior. According to Duncan, Junior was a nice dog, but not the image of his father in structure or ability but he was committed to continue the legacy with what fate had given him. The studio rather than start the new picture put Duncan on the road to promote the son of RIN TIN TIN. During that tour in 1933, RIN TIN TIN made the first commercial airplane flight by a dog and like his father won the hearts of fans across America. Duncan was dedicated to RIN TIN TIN and his ability and during a tour in England a report was published in a book that said Duncan’s wife had filed for divorce citing RIN TIN TIN as co-respondent saying Duncan loved the dog more than her. The divorce case was dropped and never granted. When World War II began Duncan wanted to serve his country but because of an injury during the first war was not allowed to re-enlist. So he did the next best thing.
US Army Dog Rin Tin Tin III
He approached the U.S. Army and suggested they consider a training camp for military dogs in California. After many times being turned down, the army finally agreed and Duncan and RIN TIN TIN III became the head trainers for Camp Hahn. During the course of the war, Duncan and RIN TIN TIN III – who was an official soldier with his number tattooed on his leg – trained more than 5,000 dogs and handlers for the war effort. When the war was over it is said that Duncan untrained many of the returning war dogs and re-placed them with the families that had donated them for the war effort. Duncan, although he loved Junior and RIN TIN TIN III, also a son of the original, continued to learn about the breed itself in a search for the finest bloodlines available. He attended dog shows and participated in the development, progress and betterment of the breed as a whole. Duncan was listed as breeder of Champion Tasso of Villa Marina, Register of Merit, one of the most well known show dogs of the time. Tasso was the grandson of International Champion Grand Victor Odin von Buescher Schloss, FH (herding) and the 1936 SV (German) Champion.
Rin Tin Tin IV
Odin was one of the most recognized dogs of that time and the grandsire of the dog that would be registered as RIN TIN TIN II by Duncan. RIN TIN TIN II would sire RIN TIN TIN IV and both dogs were used in the filming of The Adventures of RIN TIN TIN, which first aired on ABC 1954-1959. The original RIN TIN TIN sired Junior and RIN TIN TIN III. The lineage of RIN TIN TIN II-IX has also been traced to the original RIN TIN TIN who was out of Betty des Flandres and sired by Fritz de la Chasse royal.
Rin Tin Tin V
Many people who wanted pups from his famous dogs approached Duncan, but only one of those relationships would maintain the dedication necessary to continue the lineage for future generations. It was in 1956 that Jannettia Brodsgaard Propps contacted Duncan about a puppy for her breeding program. She and Duncan communicated frequently and finally on July 5, 1957 her first RIN TIN TIN IV son arrived at the airport in Houston, Texas. She would ultimately acquire four dogs directly from Duncan as well as his endorsement for success in her breeding program to continue the lineage. ‘Rinty’ as he was called at Bodyguard Kennels would begin a preservation of the legacy as soon it was discovered that Duncan suffered from bone cancer. Duncan died on September 20, 1960, but his bloodline and the legacy of RIN TIN TIN were in good hands with Ms. Propps and Bodyguard Kennels.
Rin Tin Tin VI
Ms. Propps through her frequent communications with Duncan knew exactly what he wanted in the historic progeny. He told her once his primary concerns were intelligence with the secondary being a sound working structure.
Rin Tin Tin VII
He preferred the lighter colors of the silver grey as they were more easily seen on the then black and white television. He also maintained several white coated dogs in his breeding program and did not discriminate against any dog merely because of coat color. He judged them, as did Ms. Propps, on ability, not hair color.
Rin Tin Tin VIII
Ms. Propps continued to breed and show the RIN TIN TIN dogs with help from her granddaughter, Daphne Hereford. Miss Hereford was raised by her grandmother from the time she was five years old, when she came to live with her grandmother in 1955, and quickly learned not only the qualities of the lineage, but also the aspects of participating at dog shows. Most children of the late 1950s and early 1960s participated in school sports, but Miss Hereford spent her weekends at dog class, in the kennel or at dog shows learning and being groomed to take the helm of the famed lineage.
Rin Tin Tin IX
In the 1970s both Ms. Propps and her granddaughter had security companies in Houston that provided security guard canine handlers accompanied by a RIN TIN TIN dog. The two companies maintained by the women were the only companies licensed by the State of Texas at that time that had never had a complaint filed against them. Ms. Propps passed away December 17, 1988 and the legacy was passed to Miss Hereford who continues to maintain it today. The dogs produced today by Miss Hereford at El Rancho RIN TIN TIN in Latexo, Texas are identical in structure, color and intelligence to RIN TIN TIN II and RIN TIN TIN IV. The breeding program of RIN TIN TIN is considered a “closed program” and any pups placed in pet homes are placed on a spay/neuter non-breeding agreement. “This strict criteria was initiated by my grandmother to not only protect the integrity of the lineage, but the RIN TIN TIN name,” said Miss Hereford. “If you are at the helm of something as important as the RIN TIN TIN legacy, then you are charged with a responsibility to ensure that it remains the same as it was intended by its founders. To change RIN TIN TIN in any way would be a disservice not only to my grandmother, but to Lee Duncan as well. I have dedicated my life to the maintenance of this lineage and am proud to say, the dog you see today representing RIN TIN TIN is the same dog Duncan put before the public in the 1950s,” she added. The RIN TIN TIN-breeding program carefully utilizes line breeding to insure integrity in the lineage.
Rin Tin Tin X
Outcrosses are necessary in any breeding program, but the influx of new blood to the RIN TIN TIN line is done only after meticulous research and consideration. Progeny from the out crosses are then re-entered into the RIN TIN TIN bloodline. “Seems with all things RIN TIN TIN, fate dictates events that will ensure the legacy is protected. And fate dictated that I begin my tenure with the lineage at the young age of five,” Miss Hereford said. “Now, more than 50 years later I have served the lineage longer than either Duncan or my grandmother. I have a working knowledge of the bloodline that will continue to produce dogs both Lee Duncan and my grandmother would be proud of as they are a true tribute to their namesake and identical in every way to them. There Will Always Be a RIN TIN TIN!” she continued. The RIN TIN TIN bloodline, under the direction of Miss Hereford, continues to serve the working and service dog world through ARFkids Foundation, incorporated, a 501(c)3, non-profit organization.
Shot in 2007, Finding Rin Tin Tin is based on the true story of an American corporal and his world renowned German Sheppard dog, Rin Tin Tin. The story begins with Corporal Lee Duncan, stationed in France during World War 1, who rescues a mother and her three German Sheppard puppies. Lee gives the mother and two puppies away, but keeps his favorite puppy, which he lovingly names Rin Tin Tin. When the General warns that keeping a young rambunctious dog is not permitted, Duncan discovers a solutio

Only when they want another dog, can you get another dog.
The passing away of your dog is a sad time for all pet owners and a moment we all would like to avoid altogether although it is a natural process of losing a good friend or family member there are options that can make dealing with the situation better.
It is certainly can be a big shock to you when you find out your pet has passed away and the first reaction could be that of denial. Denial is a common occurrence when dealing with loss or finding out when someone your love has passed away. This is due to your body not wanting to deal with the blow of a pet’s death and it then tries to block it out like nothing has happened.
It is generally better to accept the situation of your dogs’ death if possible, this may be hard to come to terms with for many on such an emotional time, so a burial or small gathering of friends and family who knew the dog to say a final farewell may be a good idea, and it will help you accept the current situation.
Anger and blame may be a result of the shock and you may feel like this is a way to release the emotion you are feeling and pass it on to someone else. Veterinarians go through a tuff process to get to the standard of a professional vet, and for good reason, they care for the work they do. Blaming your vet should not be an option and they are always looking out for the best interest of your dog no matter what you might think when grieving your dogs’ death. Avoid this type of behaviour as it helps no one and it will only turn into guilt on your emotions start to calm down.
When the bad news finally hits home the grieving will start and your emotions will be too much to control, it’s good to let your emotional feelings out as this helps the situation greatly. Keeping yourself overly busy is not recommended like many people do, the emotions will need to come out sometime and it has to happen to stop the feeling of emptiness. Try finding groups of others in your community or internet that can relate to your problems and talk to family and friends about your feelings. The more support you get the quicker you will learn to look back on how happy you’re dog was and how much fun you had together.

Pets produce funny predicaments on the daily. I recently asked readers to share their wildest and most embarrassing conundrums, and the responses made me cringe with a mix of giggles and horror. We can’t blame our furry friends, folks. It’s just animal behavior! Here are some of the silliest stories:
My first cat, Peyton, was a tiny 6 lb. Himalayan rescue who was a holy terror when it came to going to a groomer. She, on more than one occasion, was asked to leave and never return. One time, with a partial lion cut. And by partial, I mean only two or three shaved strips down the center of her back. She looked like a pissed off dust ruffle. - Fuzzles
The other week I was going to pick up some photos from Walgreens that was only a few miles away, and decided to let my puppy ride with me. When I got back to my apartment complex I had to roll down my window to enter my code for the gate. And of course Finn chooses that moment to make a running leap from the passenger side seat out the driver’s side window. I was sooo embarrassed to have him go flying out my car like that with other cars behind me! Although I was very thankfully that he wasn’t hurt (he’s a dachshund), and didn’t run off. - Sundaydrive

My fiance’s boxer, Willis, loves to eat anything of mine, particularly my panties. Once he swallowed a thong whole. It was bad enough when I noticed it was missing, but the next day he threw it up in my fiance’s parent’s living room. Luckily his dad is a vet so he’s seen it all. I’m just glad he didn’t have to surgically remove them from the dog’s stomach! - sweetcase
My Rottweiler, may she rest in peace, was a trash dog. She loved trash. It’s bad enough that she dug through the kitchen trash and got in to the outdoor trash cans, but one time, she got a hold of the bathroom trash. During a family BBQ, Lakota Dog came out with a plastic trash baggie full of tampon applicators, pads, and wrappers, and ripped the bag open so the contents were on full display! She must have known I couldn’t stay mad at her. - Girl Jen
About 3 weeks after we got Reuben, we were shopping for a new car. When we found one, we had to take the car we were trading in to the bank to get a check. On the way back to the dealership, two minutes before we were about to trade this old beat up Golf in, he totally peed in the backseat! - Beaner
Boarding pets can be expensive and upsetting for the animal. For some dog owners, the thought of leaving man’s best friend home while the family heads out for the weekend is unheard of. Portable dog kennels provide safe, comfortable, well-ventilated environments for travel and safe den-like retreats for downtime at home. Portable dog kennels improve the quality of pets’ and owners’ lives. Dog kennels are successful training aids when housebreaking puppies and while owners are learning when and where these new additions to the family can be trusted to be on their own.
A Few Considerations
An in-home portable dog kennel should be roomier than a traveling kennel, but small enough to place in areas of the home where the animal can interact with family and guests. Also, housebreaking is more successful when a dog is in a confined space. If the dog is a chewer, you might have a preference between nylon, plastic and metal portable dog kennels.
The dog kennel you select for travel should be large enough for the dog to stand up, turn completely around, and lie back down in without being cramped. A portable dog kennel that is too large takes up unnecessary vehicle space; airline travel regulations demand that portable dog kennels correspond with the size of the dog; trains and boats often have size restrictions.
Nylon portable dog kennels transport easily, fold quickly, and set up with ease. Metal kennels fold, but not as easily as plastic and nylon models. Plastic and nylon kennels are less likely to mar vehicle interiors and exteriors as kennels are being loaded and unloaded. Overall, portable dog kennels are designed to withstand rough treatment.
Cost may be a consideration when selecting a dog kennel; depending on construction and size, portable dog kennels can cost under $50, or in extreme cases, as much as $500. Nylon portable dog kennels are moderately priced, wire dog kennels are a bit more expensive, and well-constructed plastic dog kennels can carry the highest (but still affordable) price tag.
