All Of Us Are Dead references another zombie franchise on Netflix | Films | Entertainment

After the Netflix revelation Squid Game was released last year the streaming platform is leaning into even more Korean content. The online streaming giant has figured out that their viewers love the country’s exciting and dramatic style of storytelling, and that continues in the newly-released zombie series All Of Us Are Dead. The show is quick to point out some of its influences, however.

All Of Us Are Dead follows a group of students in a high school during an outbreak of a zombie virus. This infection, of course, leads to all of the school’s students and teachers becoming hungry undead, yearning to feast on the flesh of their peers.

Early in the series one of the surviving students, Lee Cheon-San, pointed out how similar these events were to a hit Korean zombie movie: Train to Busan. This zombie epic was released in 2016 and focussed on a zombie outbreak in a high-speed train. It was also a smash hit at the box office, making more than $98 million on just an $8 million budget.

However, this film is not the only influence the Netflix hit alludes to.

All Of Us Are Dead also references another zombie movie, this time an American one.

The students of the show offhandedly mention that their surroundings have become “a zombieland”. This is of course a reference to the 2009 film of the same name: Zombieland. The movie starred Woody Harrelson, Jesse Eisenberg, Emma Stone and Abigail Breslin.

The film followed the four unlikely pals venturing through a zombified America looking for somewhere fun to settle down. Along the way, they stumble upon Bill Murray, wads of cash, and an amusement park.

Many years later, a sequel was released.

All Of Us Are Dead has only just been released, but fans are keen to see if a second season is one the way. For now, there have been no official season two plans announced. The series was based on a webtoon, but the comic strip’s content has all been used up thus far. This likely means that any second season may take a little longer to be released.

All Of Us Are Dead is on Netflix now.

Zombieland and Zombieland: Double Tap are both on Netflix now.
