Based on interviews between Danish film-maker Jonas Poher Rasmussen and his high school classmate, who appears under the pseudonym Amin Nawabi, it tells the touching story of a troubled young man’s long journey from Afghanistan to Copenhagen.
Amin is about to get married and is house-hunting with his husband-to-be when he agrees to explore long-repressed memories of his 1980s childhood and his time living as an illegal immigrant in Communist Moscow.
While the animation is no match for Disney’s Encanto, which also explores the refugee experience, Rasmussen’s pared-down style illuminates Amin’s poignant confessions beautifully.
