How I Met Your Father has already brought back the apartment and MacLaren’s Pub. Now it’s bringing back one of the absolute best side character’s in How I Met Your Mother history. Gang, say hello once again to Kyle MacLachlan’s The Captain. Spoilers ahed for HIMYF Episode 9.
The Captain first appeared in HIMYM’s sixth season as the husband of Zoey (Morrison), an activist who became Ted’s (Josh Radnor) enemy. As Zoey protested the historic Arcadian hotel, Ted was tapped to use the property to design the new headquarters for Goliath National Bank. But thanks to Zoey’s winning personality and one stressful Thanksgiving, Zoey came to be a temporary member of the gang. That’s when Zoey and Ted went from tentative friends to a lot more.
Part of Season 6 revolved around Ted and Zoey falling for each other under the nose of Zoey’s sea-faring husband, The Captain. A recurring joke had to do with The Captain’s eyes. As happy and smiley as his face was, his eyes always looked terrifying. Zoey and The Captain eventually got a divorce, and in later seasons, The Captain eventually offered Lily (Alyson Hannigan) a job. That’s how he became a vaguely threatening but ultimately benevolent presence in this world.
So how does this salty alum connect to Sophie’s (Hilary Duff) story? “Jay Street” actually opens with The Captain in bed with a woman we’ve never seen before. His current wife, Becky (Laura Bell Bundy), catches them together, and she literally blows the whistle on him. There’s a good amount of sea jokes and some awkward scrambling before “Jay Street” pans away from this affair. As an older Sophie (Kim Cattrall) sagely tells her son, The Captain is going to play a major part in what’s to come. But we’re going to have to wait until Episode 10 to see how.
This marks How I Met Your Father’s first two-part episode as well as a major How I Met Your Mother cameo. And you know what? It’s a good one. The last time we saw The Captain he was engaged to and in love with Robin’s (Cobie Smulders) former co-anchor, Becky. One of HIMYM‘s classic episodes revolved around Becky and her infuriating habit of acting like a little girl. It’s nice to know that The Captain and Becky did, in fact, get married and that their relationship lasted for a while. Catching The Captain in an affair is a strange relief as well. Ted’s affair with Zoey was Ted at his least likable. The Captain never deserved to be betrayed like that, even if he did have creepy soulless eyes. Turning him into as big of a scoundrel as Ted eases that blow from 2010.
We still have no idea what The Captain has to do with Sophie. Is he someone’s boss? Is he going to hit on Valentina (Francia Raisa) at a party? Is this finale going to be set at sea? But no matter what it’s nice to see this genuinely kind man with the terrifying eyes.
