The first live-action Sonic the Hedgehog movie zoomed into theaters in January 2020, and absolutely nothing of consequence has happened in the two years that followed. Therefore, you’ve surely spent the past 730 days on the edge of your seat, pondering, wondering, speculating: “When will Sonic the Hedgehog 2 come out?”
Well, wonder no more, because the answer to that all-consuming question is here: Sonic the Hedgehood 2 is opening in theaters this weekend. Comedian Ben Schwartz returns as the voice of everyone’s favorite bright blue video game hedgehog, who has the power to save the world, if only he could learn to grow up a bit. Jim Carrey is also back as Sonic’s arch-rival, Dr. Robotnik, who has escaped from the mushroom planet where Sonic trapped him in the previous film.
The sequel, which was directed by Jeff Fowler, also features Idris Elba, James Marsden, Tika Sumpter, Natasha Rothwell, Adam Pally, Shemar Moore, Colleen O’Shaughnessey, and Lee Majdoub. It’s sure to keep your kids entertained for two hours, so here’s what you need to know about where to watch Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and when to expect Sonic the Hedgehog 2 on streaming.
WHERE TO WATCH SONIC THE HEDGEHOG 2:
For now, the only way to watch Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is to go to a movie theater. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 will open in theaters in the U.S on April 8, 2022. You can find tickets at a theater near you here.
After the movie’s theatrical run, you will be able to stream Sonic the Hedgehog 2 on Paramount+, the Paramount streaming service. Paramount+ offers a premium plan priced at $9.99/month or an ad-supported plan for $5.99/month.
WILL SONIC THE HEDGEHOG 2 BE ON HBO MAX? IS SONIC THE HEDGEHOG 2 ON HBO MAX?
No. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is a Paramount movie, not a Warner Bros. movie, and therefore will not be streaming on HBO Max when it opens in theaters. More than that, HBO Max will no longer be streaming theatrical movies in 2022. Last year, Warner Media opted to simultaneously release its theatrical slate on streaming, meaning HBO Max subscribers could watch movies like Matrix Resurrections at home. This year, however, Warner Bros. theatrical movies will have a 45-day theaters-only run before moving to HBO Max.
IS SONIC THE HEDGEHOG 2 ON NETFLIX?
No. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is not on Netflix, and, because it’s going to Paramount+, it likely will not be on Netflix any time soon. Sorry!
WHEN WILL SONIC THE HEDGEHOG 2 BE STREAMING ONLINE? WHEN WILL SONIC THE HEDGEHOG 2 BE ON PARAMOUNT PLUS?
While there is not an official Paramount+ release date for Sonic the Hedgehog, we can expect Sonic the Hedgehog to be on Paramount+ after 30 to 45 days in theaters. Last year, Paramount announced all of its titles would be moving to Paramount+ after 30 days in theaters, while big tentpole titles would get 45 days in theaters. Therefore, you should see Sonic The Hedgehog 2 on Paramount+ around late May to early June 2022.
It’s not clear if you will also be able to buy or rent Sonic The Hedgehog 2 on VOD at the same time it releases on Paramount+. While The Quiet Place Part II came to digital on the same day it was released on Paramount+, the more recent release of Jackass Forever on Paramount+ was not accompanied by a VOD release. Instead, Jackass Forever came to VOD about a week after it was released on Paramount+. If you want to be able to watch Sonic the Hedgehog 2 on streaming as soon as it’s available, your best bet is to sign up for Paramount+.
