The MCU has covered many different genres. From crime thrillers to space operas, it seems like there is little Marvel can’t do. It has never made a musical though – unless audiences count the Rogers play seen in Hawkeye on Disney Plus – despite the fact one of the stars has a singing career on the side. Unbeknownst to most fans, the discovery of his discography has sent listeners into a frenzy, with many in disbelief. One commented: “My jaw DROPPED when he started singing.” It begs the question, when will we see him sing in the superhero universe?
The cast of the Avengers are some of the most popular celebrities around, with fans desperate to learn everything about them. While Robert Downey Jr’s Iron Man, Chris Evans’ Captain America and Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow have stepped away from the franchise – at least for now – they are still considered some of the biggest players in the universe. The same is true for Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk, Chris Hemsworth’s Thor and Jeremy Renner’s Hawkeye.
The latter just received his own Disney Plus series, finally putting the archer centre stage for the first time. The TV show has since led to a resurgence of love for the character, as he has always been one of the more grounded of the superhero team. Yet, what fans might not realise is Renner is the lead singer of his own musical act. It turns out Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man was right in No Way Home when he thought the Avengers was a band.
The 51-year-old star clearly has a passion for acting, having starred in hits such as The Hurt Locker, The Town and Wind River. But, he also has a passion for music, and released his first EP in 2020, titled The Medicine. In the same year, he dropped another EP, Live for Now.
His mainstream music career began in 2019 with the release of Arctic Dogs, an animated kids film in which he voiced the main character Swifty. The star wrote and recorded the entire soundtrack for the film, leading him to release three singles in 2019, with Main Attraction proving to be his most popular reaching over nine million views on YouTube.
Trending on social media, fans have been taking to the song to share their reactions, with most in utter shock the track exists. Mista JC commented: “I was today years old when I learned of his music career….”
Atropos Black wrote: “Had no idea that Jeremy Renner could SING LIKE THIS…. Holy S**t… I heard this song and entered into the rabbit hole of his music and am SO HAPPY..” While Cluv22 jokingly added: “His next single is called ‘Budapest’ ft. Scarlett Johansson.”
Renner has been sharing his music on Instagram. Upon the release of Live for Now, the star wrote: “Huge thank you to the amazing team that helped bring #LiveForNow to life and to all of you!” He also admitted music was always his main passion, with acting only coming later. The Avenger explained: “Acting came into my brain around 20. Music has always been my first love as far as something other than my family.” (via. People)
His love for music started at a young age when he was making instruments out of cardboard at 12 years old. Renner said: “I put on a show, and I charged my sister a dollar and all her friends a dollar to come in and watch us play cardboard instruments. I think I made five bucks!”
The star can play multiple instruments – guitar, drums and piano. He has also been recording music since an early age, even having his own little studio at home for some time. But, it was his film connections that ultimately brought him into music professionally. Some of music credits include North Country, Love Comes to the Executioner and The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford.
Marvel’s Hawkeye and Avengers saga are available on Disney Plus now.
