More Sonic is on the way. After the trailer for Sonic the Hedgehog 2 debuted during the Super Bowl this past weekend, Paramount Pictures has already announced a Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is in the works. Even better: we’re getting more of Knuckles (Idris Elba) too, with the character earning his own live-action spinoff series on Paramount+.
“We’ve got a remarkable partnership with Paramount, and we are excited to continue expanding the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise with them,” Sega CEO Haruki Satomi said during the presentation. “… Sonic has been beloved by fans across the world for over 30 years and we look forward to continuing to bring memorable moments and experiences to them for many years to come.”
Sonic the Hedgehog is set to debut in theaters on April 8, and will most likely head to Paramount+ soon after. Elba’s Knuckles will be introduced in the follow-up, and continue into his own spinoff. Along with that, Sega and Paramount+ are already developing Sonic the Hedgehog 3.
Brian Robbins, the president and CEO of Paramount Pictures, added, “For more than three decades, Sonic the Hedgehog‘s universe of vibrant, unique characters has generated one of the most passionate fanbases. We look forward to continuing our collaboration with Sega, Neal Moritz, and all our creative partners as we explore additive ways to holistically scale the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise across platforms and captivate its loyal audience around the world.”
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is again directed by Jeff Fowler. Jim Carrey returns as villain Dr. Robotnik, along with Ben Schwartz as the voice of the iconic furry blue character. James Marsden, Tika Sumpter, Natasha Rothwell, Shemar Moore and Adam Pally also star.
“WE ARE BUILDING A WHOLE UNIVERSE HERE PEOPLE!!!” Schwartz tweeted when the news was announced. “HONORED TO BE A PART OF THE RIDE. #SONICMOVIE2 COMING 4/8 AND THEN GET READY FOR #SONICMOVIE3! THAT WAS THE FIRST TIME I’VE EVER USED THAT HASHTAG AND IT FELT GREAT.”
