Disney+ subscribers are getting some exclusive bonus content this coming March. The streamer announced today that Pixar‘s upcoming animated family film Turning Red will premiere exclusively in homes worldwide on Disney+ beginning on Friday, March 11. That’s a twist of events in Disney’s previous plan for Turning Red, which was originally slated to have an exclusive theatrical run beginning on that same day.
Turning Red follows Mei Lee (Rosalie Chiang), a dorky 13-year-old with plenty of bodily changes — including a new feature where she “poofs” into a giant red panda whenever she’s excited. That’s a new one! Helming from Bao director Domee Shi, Turning Red will follow the young girl as she’s “torn between staying her mother’s dutiful daughter and the chaos of adolescence.”
“Disney+ subscribers around the world enthusiastically embraced Pixar’s Academy Award-winning Soul and the critically-acclaimed Luca when they premiered exclusively on the service and we look forward to bringing them Pixar’s next incredible feature film Turning Red,” said Kareem Daniel, Chairman, Disney Media & Entertainment Distribution. “Given the delayed box office recovery, particularly for family films, flexibility remains at the core of our distribution decisions as we prioritize delivering the unparalleled content of The Walt Disney Company to audiences around the world.”
While Disney has made some of their collection available via Premier Access — including titles like Jungle Cruise, Black Widow, and Raya and the Last Dragon — Turning Red will be available on the normal Disney+ tier. It joins fellow pandemic Pixar movies Soul and Luca to be uploaded to the platform at no additional cost, avoiding the $29.99 fee Disney has previously instated.
The news comes as the Omicron variant of COVID surges across the nation, with an average of over 600,000 new cases being reported daily. At this time, the CDC has only recommended that children aged five and older receive vaccinations, meaning that any kids under five looking to see Turning Red in theaters would be unvaccinated.
In international markets where Disney+ has not yet been released, the film will still have a theatrical premiere. Release dates will be announced at a later date.
