Perhaps even more memorable than the Super Bowl winners are the halftime performers. Prince, Katy Perry and Diana Ross are among the many superstars who’ve entertained during the big game — and while music and dancing are typically the focus, wardrobe can often take center stage, as Justin Timberlake and Janet Jackson proved in 2004. With the addition of Mary J. Blige’s blinged-out crop top and thigh-high boots at the 2022 Super Bowl, here are some of the most iconic looks to grace the stage over the years.

The Weeknd stuck to his “After Hours” aesthetic for his 2021 Super Bowl performance, donning a head-to-toe Givenchy look comprised of a crystal-studded red jacket, a black shirt and trousers, a black leather tie and gloves and black-and-white derbies. While the star’s face didn’t appear altered for the halftime show — as it has over the past year or so — his dancers sported bandaged faces and similar red-and-black suits.

Jennifer Lopez, who began her 2020 Super Bowl show with a pole dance, dazzled in a series of costumes by Versace that included a black leather bodysuit and matching chaps as well as a sheer sequined silver catsuit. Perhaps the most memorable, though, was an oversized feather cape with the Puerto Rican flag on one side and the American flag on the other, which she wore as to sing “Let’s Get Loud” alongside daughter Emme.

While Adam Levine’s 2019 performance was most memorable for the moment he stripped down to show off his chest full of tattoos, Atlanta native Big Boi made a big statement in this oversized fur coat.

Travis Scott may have only performed one song during the 2019 Super Bowl, but his outfit made a lasting impression; there were plenty of tweets and memes about his oversized Louis Vuitton belt.

Justin Timberlake’s 2018 “Man of the Woods” phase included lots of camo, orange bandanas — and this Stella McCartney shirt that featured a mountainscape many compared to a default computer background.

Lady Gaga is known for over-the-top costumes, and her 2017 Super Bowl performance sure didn’t disappoint. The singer was completely covered in Swarovski crystals, from her eye makeup to her knee-high boots as she made history as the first person to use the word “transgender” during the halftime show.

Beyoncé joined Bruno Mars on stage in 2016. The “Formation” songstress made a statement by channeling Michael Jackson’s 1993 Super Bowl performance, while her backup dancers wore costumes that evoked the Black Panther Party amid a national debate about police brutality. Bruno Mars and his team matched in black leather and gold.

Though Left Shark stole the spotlight during Katy Perry’s halftime show in 2015, the “California Gurls” singer had multiple bright and creative wardrobe changes. Some of her more memorable looks included this beach ball-inspired bra and skirt as well as a flame-covered outfit for her hit song, “Roar.”

Madonna channeled another queen — Cleopatra — for a portion of her 2012 performance, which also featured CeeLo Green, Nicki Minaj, M.I.A and LMFAO. She opened the show with “Vogue.”

Before Prince’s 2007 performance, the skies opened up in Miami. While it rained heavily the entire time, Prince was unfazed in a turquoise suit, orange shirt and black headscarf.

Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake’s 2004 halftime show will live in infamy for what she wasn’t wearing by the end. The event inspired a new term — “wardrobe malfunction” — and saw Jackson being banned on many channels and radio stations.

In 2003, Shania Twain wowed in a floor-length leather coat, tiny crystal bra and thigh-high boots. No Doubt and Sting followed her performance of “Man! I Feel Like a Woman” and “Up.”

In 2001, Nelly claimed neutral territory in the game between the Baltimore Ravens and the New York Giants with his collaged shirt. Meanwhile, Britney Spears, NSYNC and headliner Aerosmith dressed in their early-aughts best.

Diana Ross always steals the show, and she did just that in an enormous orange and purple gown during her performance in 1996.
